Finding Your Creative Genius

There is a wonderful TED talk by Elizabeth Gilbert titled “Your Elusive Creative Genius”. I have watched this talk about 20 times and never tire of it. It's my go-to when I get bogged down in a work, or when I need some perspective on myself and need to get my ego in check.

Elizabeth talks openly about this idea of creativity and where it comes from.
Is it born from one person’s mind, or does it originate from something bigger than us mere mortals?
She discusses ancient Greece where the idea of GENIUS was something external to individuals. It is a Divine presence that is available to everyone. In other words, people are not born a genius, everyone has the capacity to channel it. I really love this idea and highly recommend this TED talk. I send the link to all my students.

A weight is lifted from you when you can rock up to the studio or work and talk to your Genius, saying…”So I’m here. I’ve turned up. Can you please give me some help here and tell me how I can work today”.

I work like this daily. It’s a kind of light-hearted chat with myself. At times I feel a little nutty doing it which brings a smile to my face but that can only be a good thing, don’t you think? I turn up, ask Genius for some help and then the magic happens. It’s so wonderful that I can let go and give the reins to ‘someone else’. Give it a go, I’d love to hear about your experiences.

“Imagination abandoned by reason produces impossible monsters; united with her, she is the mother of the arts and source of their wonders.”

“The Artist’s Landscape’ group exhibition opens March 31 at The Moree Gallery.

The small suite of work will be shown at this exhibition.  It is based on a trip to the Liverpool Ranges and Plains in October 2022. The premise was to capture landscape around the town of Qurindi after the rain events of the year. The area had been in drought for quite some time and we were interested to witness the landscape after La Niña. The subsequent work is heavy in impasto oil paint which consequently gives a sculptural texture. The connection between landscape and humanity is conveyed through this technique. I want the paint to have a skin like texture.

I hope you enjoy the work.
