Sunlit Plains as Wide as Seas, oil on wood, 30 x 100cm

Bringing the paddock into the studio.

After the intensity of Summer, with fires and drought, my work ha drifted inwards and I found myself working in the studio during the Covid period.

The latest suite of works which is currently on show at Weswal Gallery suggests this slight transition of introspection.

Reflecting on past work through studies and my invaluable sketch book, these new works are heavy with delicious paint and thickly applied. Broad marks sweep across the canvas with luscious intensity. Texture, colour, shape are all important to convey my love of the Australian landscape.

Inspired by the work of our beloved poet Banjo Patterson,
this current suite of work seeks to bring his words into life through paint.

'Song of the Future'
“…And some have said that Nature’s face
To us is always sad; but these
Have never felt the smiling grace
Of waving grass and forest trees
On sunlit plains as wide as seas.
A land where dull Despair is king
O’er scentless flower and songless bird!”
But we have heard the bell-birds ring
Their silver bells at eventide,
Like fairies on the mountain side,
The sweetest note man ever heard…”

I hope you enjoy this new body of work.
